One of the things fans of international movies learn rather quickly is that the genre of horror varies from culture to culture. It should come as no surprise that this is reflected in the horror stories they tell and the places that they consider to be among the most haunted regions in their countries.

Mexico has some areas that they consider haunted that are disturbing as much for the stories behind them as the oddity of their presentation. We’re going to explore some of these great areas and the haunted house props they’ve inspired.

Mexico’s Isle of Dolls

The Island of Dolls: As if the name of this island isn’t enough to send shudders down the spines of true fans of horror, the actual visuals of the place are even more disturbing. The island is home to hundreds of a horror animatronics dolls that are hung all over the island in tribute to the body of the young girl that was found there by Don Julian Santana for nearly 80 years. 80 Years of old, aging, decaying dolls from every generation moldering in trees watching over the land. It doesn’t help that they’ve been reported to talk or move.

Mexico City’s Posada del Sol

This hotel is nestled in the heart of Mexico City, and bears the graffiti of a hundred inner-city gangs and nighttime wanderers over its ancient walls. This building used to be an opulent location that was loved by the people of the city. Loved, that is, until its owner Saldaña Galván was found having committed suicide in the courtyard of his hotel due to crushing debt. There’s also the ghost of a young girl that was found in the basement who often receives candy at an altar made for her. The gifts are believed to hold off her curse.

Mexico City’s Tasqueña Station

So there are haunted islands and haunted hotels, but it just so happens that their public transport system is also believed to be haunted. Thankfully this ghost is completely friendly, an elderly gentleman who spends his afterlife haunting commuters who find themselves alone on the platform. The story is that he died on the platform waiting for his train after being assaulted and his purpose is to protect fellow travelers from the same fate.

Guadalajara Panteón de Belén

In the middle of Guadalajara is a graveyard purported to be haunted by various supernatural agents, including vampires, ghosts, and a strange monster that haunts the village. The stories behind this area are as fascinating as they are terrifying, including a giant tree having grown from a stone slab where a vampire was staked in the cemetery's center.

These are just some of the fascinating areas that intrepid ghost hunters can choose to visit while traveling south of the border. There’s countless other stories to be found here, and all of them are as fascinating as the last and as scary as the latest halloween masks. If you’re interested in movies based on this myth try checking out the upcoming horror film The Curse of La Llorona, it’s sure to be a spooky time.
